Negative Nancy It’s Over
Yes, I was a negative Nancy at one point in my life. Meaning I struggled with this for years. With my past childhood and with the “series of unfortunate events” life had to offer I began looking at the negative in EVERYTHING. Negative thoughts also come from anxiety. If your reading this in Nancy’s mindset your thinking, “How is this silly blog going to help? I have to go to work. I hate work. how long is this article? I have nothing to wear to work.” Soon enough if your inner thoughts are like this you are going to start saying them out loud and start complaining a lot to your friends, pretty soon they are not going to want to hang out with you! I say this because IT HAPPENED TO ME! Overcoming negativity and anxiety is important to your spiritual health. This hinders your faith and walk with God. That is the spot Satan wants you in. Positive Polly here we come.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
1.) Realize We are in a Spiritual Battle
In today’s world we are hardwired into thinking that everything that is true is seen and the proof is in the pudding. As a Christian it is very important that you realize that this world is not as important as the spiritual world. We only have a short time here on earth and an eternity to look forward to. Satan is the enemy and negativity is a tactic from Satan. When you really come to grips with this then you can equipped yourself when these negative thoughts come to destroy your life. Jesus came so that we would have a great life an a possibility to spend eternity with him.
2 Corinthians 10:4-5
“For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have the divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every though captive to obey Christ.”
In this scripture arguments can be with yourself, or a negative opinion about yourself or others. Remember that God is more powerful and in the end we will conquer through him. We have to win little battles in our life to fully enjoy life as God intended. Give those thoughts to God. He will take them and work with you on walking in faith and joy.
2.) Read the Bible
I know I used to get tired of hearing this one too. I used to think “The bible is so boring, I don’t understand it. How is this going to help.” The word is ALIVE, and it is a love letter written to us with weapons to destroy the enemy in your walk. Do you want to walk in peace, joy, acceptance, and power through God? READ IT. Once you pray and truly give your life to God the word changes to you. It gives life to the bible and when that happens you will be thinking “Why have I not been reading this all along.” Sometimes I use devotional books with scripture in it, and I love the Bible App! You can add plans according to what you need and it is bible centered. Clothe yourself in the fruits of the spirit to protect yourself from spiritual attacks, and remember once a small battle is won your walk with God gets easier as you strengthen in him. These fruits I will be showing in number 4. Do not give up!
“For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
3.) Write them out, cross them off and write a positive underneath.
This does wonders. When you write them out, think in your mind that this is your way of giving them to God. Pray before you start and really dig deep. Even if it is shamefully negative, no one will see but you and God. The act of crossing them out is the final step in giving it to God, the act of replacing them with TRUTH is you accepting what God has truly given in your life or having faith in what is soon to come.
“I feel like no one really loves me and accepts me.”
“God loves me.”
“I hate my job, and my co-workers.
“I am grateful for a job, and God can help me to have grace with my co-workers.”
“I will never lose the weight.”
“I love myself, I am made in the image of God, and he will strengthen me to keep going.”
4.) Get Dressed, with the Fruits of the Spirit
This is not easy at first, you almost have to force this one on yourself. The fruits of the spirit are:
- Self Control
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.”
Sometimes if on a bad day I feel like I am seeping into that negative mindset I have to pray for God to help me get dressed and take of the worldly clothes. If you are walking day to day with this in mind each fruit you bare can help you in any enemy attack. Love triumphs hate, joy triumphs sadness, peace triumphs anxiety, longsuffering triumphs never growing, kindness triumphs evil, goodness triumphs sin, faithfulness triumphs worry, gentleness triumphs anger and self control triumphs failure. Longsuffering I feel that I have to explain, through hard times in life in the end what do we do, we grow, learn and become stronger. Take it from me, I have had long-long suffering, but I am using it to help others and without my growth what could I give to my readers? Without longsuffering we stay stagnate and do not change. No challenge, no change. Let us put on the fruit of the looms..jk the fruits of the spirit and take off our worldly clothes. SERIOUSLY it works.
5.) Surround Yourself with Positivity
I found myself during my negative time of life, struggling to love my job. I wasn’t happen with management and it was a very toxic work environment. I had a co-worker that I could open up too and soon enough it became a NANCY FEST. Working with another Nancy seemed to really make things harder for me to “look on the bright side.” even though I felt like I was “getting stuff of my chest.” It seemed that I was adding her negativity to my own chest. It is one of those feel goods for a second until coming down with a crash. I began to bring it home to my husband and negativity spread at home. I felt like I was on this very long downward slide that was not anyway slippery enough. It was like one of those slides that you wish you had worn pants instead of shorts. This doesn’t just apply to people you surround yourself with, it can be music, movies, video games and even places you go. It is important that you avoid other negative people because misery loves company, but nobody really wins, they are all miserable. Find a positive Polly and hang out with her. Avoid music that can change your thinking and listen to Christian more. I know Nancy, “I don’t like that kind, it sounds too churchy.” Polly here and she says there are all types of genres for Christian music now days, just keep looking. Also I am a fan of video games, I have since I was a kid and frankly Grand Theft Auto is not exactly going to keep me out of a negative funk so stay positive fellow gamers. If you find yourself stuck in traffic most evenings, and you begin griping about it, stop at peaceful place on your way home. Stopping somewhere peaceful like a beach, field, or a park can make all the difference. These are just a few tips. Comment if you would like more! I enjoy writing and I hope that I can help!
